Manang is a town in the Manang District of Nepal which is located at 28°40’0N 84°1’0E with an altitude of 3,519. At the time of the 2011Nepal census, it had a population of 6538 people living in 1495 individual households. It is situated on the large valley of the Marshyangdi river to the north of the Annapurna mountain range. The river flows towards the East To the West, there are the 5,416 meters high Mountain pass of “Thorong La”. To the North, there is a Chulu East peak of 6584 meters. Most groups trekking around the Anapurna will take relax days in Manang to acclimatize to the high altitude, before taking the “Thorong La” pass. The village is located on the northern slope, which gets the most sunlight and the least snow cover in the winter. The agriculture fields are on the North Slope with terraces. There is no motorable roads, only trails where most heavy goods are transported on mule trains or ported by porters. 2.5 km to the East of the town there is a small airport serving the whole valley. The airport is fairly recent which did not exist in 1985. Besides catering to the trekking groups there is some agriculture and corral activity (Yaks). There is a medical center which trains in high-altitude sickness. Tourism Spots 1. Annapurna Mountain Range: Annapurna, a colossal mastiff is placed as the 10th tallest mountain in the world. Kali Gandaki river isolates Annapurna mountain range from the great gorge that slices through the Himalayas. The range of Mount Annapurna holds huge glaciers on its slope. 2. Kicho Tal Lake: Lake Kicho Tal is one of the most fascinating places you can visit on the trek around Annapurna. However, since it is high off the main route (1100 meters above the Marsyangdi valley), it is not so periodically visited. 3. Tilicho Lake: If you walk away from the main circuit of the trek over Annapurnas experience throughout Nepal. Large lake lying at an altitude of nearly five thousand meters above sea level is surrounded on one side by Dry crumbled hills and from the other side rises an unassailable wall of Tilicho peak. 4. Chorten above Ghyaru: From chorten above the village of Ghyaru you have the tremendous view of Annapurna range, and the entire Marsyangdi valley. In addition, it is a poorly-visited expectation, so it is quiet and peaceful. 5. Thorong La Pass: Thorong la pass is probably the most famous pass throughout Nepal which is said to be the highest tourist place throughout the country, which is not correct. But the truth is that you can cross it in sandals if the weather is good because the path over it is neither steep nor cramped and trade caravans from Tibet used to walk this way. But it exactly cannot be underestimated, because it had several times become a trap for tourists in a snowstorm 6. Lake Gangapurna Tal: One of the appeals in Manang lying just below the town is a small Lake Gangapurna Tal, which is located along the moraine of the most important glacier in the area, which significantly escaped during the last few decades. Around the lake leads a popular tourist trail to the lookout Chongkor, from which you can see the lake. 7. Valley of Marsyangdi River: Marsyangdi river will guide you for the entire half of the long trek around Annapurnas. It springs below the Famous lake Tilicho in order to separate Annapurnas from Damodar’s Himalayas. It then sharply turns to the south and has in these places the most interesting canyon-like character, when is the hiking trail dramatically fired in a rock high above the river. Further to the south, it is already relatively wide and less fierce. 8. Yakwakang: Yakwakang is the mountain succeeding directly the world-famous Thorong la pass. From the south side, from where most tourists see it, it looks more like a rock castle rather than 6000 meters high mountain. But from the north side, it is relatively very icy, like all other mountains of Damodar’s Himalayas. 9. Chulu West: The Back peak of Chulu massif comes to the fore mainly on the way to Thorong La pass, where you can enjoy views of its northwestern heavily refrigerate wall which also belongs to the list of Nepal hiking peaks.
