Pokhara Facts

The district covers parts of the Annapurna mountain range, and also the picturesque scene of the mountains can be observed from most parts of the district. It is one of the best travel destinations in Nepal. The district is choked with rivers like Seti Gandaki, Modi, and Madi along with other rivulets whose headquarters Pokhara lies about 750 m above the ocean level and is one of the best traveler destinations in the world. The district is known for the Himalayan range with about 11 chains of mountains with a height greater than 7000m. The notable Peaks include Machhapuchhre (Virgin Peak – 6993m). The Annapurna range in the northern side is usually full of snow. The beautiful scenery of the northern mountains, the gorge of Seti River, David Falls, natural caves, Fewa Lake, Begnas Lake, and Rupa Lake are important natural resources of this district with great tourism values.

The district includes people with Multi-language, multi-religion and multiple cultures. Different folks have different foods, dresses, and norms based on their caste and religion. Many places offer Home Stay for internal as well as international tourists along with the performance of local dance according to caste and cultures. According to the census of 2011 Kaski district has people of about 84 castes, 44 languages, and 11 religions. The dressing system of people here matches with National dress. The main foods of people here are Dal-Bhat Tarkari, Roti, and Dhindo (These are typical Nepalese foods). The district is the commonplace of various castes like Gurung, Brahmin, Chhetri, Newar, Thakali, Kumal and lots of additional.

Phewa Lake: The second largest lake in Nepal adds the enthralling beauty of Pokhara where the changing light of the sun on the Phewa Lake provides aesthetic calmness to the connoisseurs of nature. On the eastern side of the lake, the visitor can find a cluster of restaurants and pubs. Along with these attractions, boating, sailing, kayaking, canoeing, swimming, bird watching, fishing, and angling are a list of the activities which can be done in Phewa Lake. In the mid of the lake stands the Varahi Temple, dedicated to Varaha which represents as Shaktipith where animal and bird sacrifices are offered to the goddess Varahi. Basically, the Hindu crowd makes an animal sacrifice every Saturday.

David’s Fall: David’s Fall is a charming little waterfall located about 2 km south-west of the Pokhara airport on the Siddhartha Highway which attracts the visitor to view the mystery of waterfall and its associated painful legend of David’s fall. Gupteswar Gupha is a mysteriously sacred cave located very near to David’s Fall which holds special value for Hindus’ since a phallic symbol of Lord Shiva is preserved here in the condition it was discovered. Locally, it is also named as Gupteswar Mahadev.

Bindabasini Temple: It is the oldest religious shrine in Pokhara built in the 16th century. The main shrine of the temple is dedicated to Goddess Durga where Hindu worshippers flock here to perform sacrifices, especially on Saturday.

Mahendra Gupha: It is another major attractive natural site reached after a two-hour walk north of Pokhara which is known as the ‘House of Bats’ owing to a number of bats living within its walls. There is another deep cave called Chamero Gufa or Bat’s Cave owing to a number of bats living within its walls.

Seti Gandaki Gorg: A wonders of nature goes underground, vanishing from sight in many places along its route through the city. At various points, the river is barely 2meters wide where its depth is beyond imagination. A good spot for watching the river below is Mahendra Pul, a small bridge at the center of the city.

World Peace Pagoda: A massive Buddhist Stupa is an impressive site in Pokhara situated on top of a hill on the southern shore of Phewa lake being an impressive sight in itself, the Buddhist shrine is a great vantage point which offers spectacular views of the Annapurna range and Pokhara city.

Sarangkot: A couple of degrees cooler in Pokhara which is the highest point in the valley, best for watching the sunrise or the city lights also one of the best areas for paragliding, some say the best area, as you’ll be able to watch the Dhaulagiri and the Annapurna Range from a different view; from above.
